How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description with AI (Without Lying)
Generic AI rewrites get you past skimmers but not through ATS. Here is a 4-step workflow to tailor your resume to a job description using AI, while keeping every word true.

# How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description with AI (Without Lying)
Most people use AI to "make their resume sound better." That is the wrong job.
Recruiters and ATS systems do not care about fancy words. They care about relevance. The best use of AI is to map your real experience to the specific job description, then rewrite your bullets so the match is obvious.
Here is a simple workflow that keeps your resume honest and makes it land more interviews.
## 1. Paste the job description into an AI prompt
Start by asking the AI to extract the hard and soft skills from the posting.
Prompt:
"Read this job description and list the top 10 required skills, ranked by how often they appear or how strongly they are emphasized."
This gives you a keyword map. Do not rewrite your resume yet.
## 2. Score your current resume against that map
Go through your resume line by line. For each skill the JD asks for, ask:
- Do I have direct experience with this?
- Do I have transferable experience?
- Is it missing entirely?
Be honest. If you do not have a skill, do not add it. Instead, look for adjacent experience you can frame.
## 3. Rewrite bullets with the STAR method, not buzzwords
For each relevant experience, rewrite the bullet using STAR:
- Situation: the context
- Task: your responsibility
- Action: what you did
- Result: the measurable outcome
Then weave in one or two keywords from the JD naturally.
Example:
Before: "Led a marketing team."
After: "Led a 6-person growth marketing team (cross-functional with Product and Sales) to launch a paid acquisition campaign that reduced CAC by 22% in 90 days."
## 4. Run an ATS scan before you submit
Use a tool that checks keyword density, formatting, and readability. A good ATS scan tells you whether a real parser will see your content or get tripped up by tables, headers, or graphics.
CareerFindr does this automatically: upload your resume, paste the JD, and get a match score plus rewritten bullets in one workflow.
## What to avoid
- Do not add skills you do not have.
- Do not let AI invent project names, metrics, or titles.
- Do not submit a resume with formatting that ATS cannot read.
AI is a mirror, not a makeup artist. Use it to show your real experience in the language the employer already uses.
